January's Disaster Preparedness Challenge - Water

Last week's floods in Eastern Australia, the one-year anniversary of Haiti's eartquake (there are still a million people without homes!), as well as the mudslides in Brazil this week, have got me thinking about preparing for natural disasters.
While I do not plan on building an underground bunker to store artillery and MRE's in case of mass anarchy,  I think that it is important to make reasonable attempts to prepare for emergencies.  As a Christian, I believe that God holds the future in His hands and therefore we do not have to live in dread of what "might happen". But at the same time, it is wise to be prepared for things that are likely to happen, such as earthquakes in southern Californina where Pete and I  live. Not only can being prepared help you and your family survive an emergency, it can help your neighbors, and it can help rescue crews be able to save more lives if they don't have to save yours! So once a month I will post a "Disaster Preparedness Challenge".
Since clean water is essential for survival, the most logical place to start is having a three day water supply for each person in your family. There are only two of us, so we need six gallons of water. I had three already, two in the garage and one in the trunk of the car - so I bought three more on Monday while grocery shopping.

Challenge: Buy at least one gallon of water for each member of your family.

  1. I'm in! I have been thinking the same thing. I have 3 cases of bottled water and have decided to always keep 3 cases on hand.

  4. Oh I'm in. I think about this stuff a lot and have an emergency back pack ready to go. Unfortunately it needs to be looked at and re-done. Somehow after our fire 1 1/2 years ago everything got out of whack and disorganized also. It has taken me all this time to try to get through it all and part of that process will be the preparation for emergencies. My challenge is knowing where to put this stuff as I don't live on ground level and I can't be sure that after a quake the water will be available to me if I put it out on the patio. That is why I have my things in a backpack so I can leave it handy and hopefully be able to grab it and take it with me if anything should happen.

I could put water pills in my pack but not sure if there would be any water available if I go with this idea. Any suggestions?

  5. Joyful, we keep half of our water in our garage -we are not at ground level either, but I don't know where else to put it! (I hope we could get to it!) - and the other half in the trunk of our car. Maybe you could put some water bottles in your car? I should think about keeping one or two bottles under my kitchen sink or something in case we can't get to the garage!
