50 Things in 21 Days

So far this year has not gone according to plan. This week I got over the flu, but I have developed a cold which has kept me from being able to really start exercising much (I did manage to eek out 4 miles though). So it is time to really step back and try to build my immune system (which is weakened by a condition I have). I am:
1) Drinking 10 glasses of water a day
2) Taking powder vitamin C and liquid echinacea (they are supposed to absord easier!)
3) Making sure to get at least 8 hours of sleep a night.
4) Drinking 1 oz of Noni Juice a day (it tastes nasty, but it is already helping in some other areas besides immunity, which I won't gross you out with :).
Hopefully, these steps will help me get and stay healthy! If not, I may have to do something drastic, like go on a week long juice fast. Yikes!

Reading the Bible and praying have been going well, which is helping me with my attitude about being sick - God's been giving me the grace to be much more thankful this week. God loves me unconditionally, all of our needs are met, I am married to the man of my dreams - what do I have to complain about!!

Sadly, I did not get my etsy shop up as I planned! Being a procrastinating perfectionist, such a big task seems almost overwhelming! I did manage to get a good profile picture (which I still need to upload) and take photos of new calligraphy pieces I gave as Christmas presents. Next week, I am determined to get it up and running, and to achieve that, I have the mini-goal of working on it at least half an hour a day. I can do anything, no matter how daunting, for half an hour!

What do you do boost your immune system in the cold/flu season? How do break large tasks into smaller, more achievable ones?

  1. Good for you. It works for some people to break things into manageable pieces. As for me, I just sort of plunge in and do things that I feel like doing and so they get done. I am finding that the whole decluttering/simplifying project is a process. It isn't a thing that is achieved instantly. It will take months, perhaps years to reverse years of consumerism and so little by little I am making progress. I will consider the week ahead of me and what needs doing and block out time on the calender for it and when you make an appointment with yourself, it helps to get things done. Otherwise a whole week can go by without getting to my many jobs/tasks at hand.

As for the cold/flu, have you ever tried Cold FX? I found that works. If you have an overactive immune system by the way, echinacea is not good for you, so please just check it out further if you have any immune system issues. My mom has lupus and that is why I know this isn't good for anyone with an overactive system.

Perfectionism used to be my weakness. I do not know exactly how I overcame it. I think at some point when I started becoming ill, I just learned to let that go. Now a job nicely done is okay with me. It doesn't have to be perfect.

  2. Joyful- I know what you mean about the decluttering/simplifying thing being a process! I have been decluttering since New Years, and it seems like every day I find something that I need to give away or make over into something else! (Like 20 unmatched socks!)That is a good idea to set aside blocks of time on your calender.

I'll look into the cold/flu FX. You are the second person who has mentioned that about echinachea - the first being my mom - I should check into that! (Although my immune system seems rather underactive, lol).

Perfectionism is something God is slowing setting me free from, but it is such a long process!

  3. Don't get down on yourself for not being able to get over flu and cold fast enough or get to do all your "to dos" as quickly as you wanted. Just try not to stress. Everything will get done.

I was scanning through a book tonight at the drugstore. I wish I could remember the name of the book but it had to do with decluttering...one of the author's tips was that we had to get rid of the word "instant" and that decluttering and finding a new way of simplified, organized living was a process in which we were learning new habits that take time to gel. I could relate to that in a big way. (Happy to say I didn't break down and buy the book as books are one of my weaknesses).

You are fortunate to have realized that you are a perfectionist at a young age. I never realized I was one until much later and I never realized either that it was due to fear of failure. Once I realized that, I began to ask myself what I was afraid of failing at and what the consequences would be if I did. It usually turned out that failure was no biggie and that the consequences were not that great...so that gives a release. Also, when you are faced with not enough time in the day, you need to ask yourself, what does it matter if the table cloth is straight or the dust bunnies are all gone when compared to whether you have enjoyed your life, time with family and friends and doing the many important things that we are all called to do. I'm not saying that we ought not to be clean, lol, but within reason, I think it is okay to let go a bit and live. Sorry if I sound preachy here as I don't mean to. I just wanted to share what I've had to work through in dealing with similar issues in the hopes something might help you also. Big hugs and hope you get well soon.

  4. Sorry to hear you have been under the weather.

Perfectionism is something I struggle with too. When I am putting off doing something because I won't be able to do it perfectly at this time I remind myself of the Shaker idea of always putting a (deliberate) imperfection in their quilts because only God is perfect. Sometimes near enough really is good enough, and you have to give yourself some grace in these tasks.

  5. Thanks for the encouragement Joyful! I am not too much of a perfectionist about housework, thankfully - my version of cleaning is set the timer for 15 minutes for each room each day, and only do more if I feel like it! It actually works well! But yes, fear of failure is certainly a root of perfectionism and procrastination - and I've found the key to fight it for myself is reminding myself of God's great grace.

  8. As soon as I say this, I'll probably get sick... Thankfully I haven't been sick in a long time. I take a daily allergy pill as a preventative measure, as well as my daily multi-vitamin. I wash my hands frequently, especially when dealing with others who are sick. I keep hand sanitizer in my purse, which I use - and make the boys use - before eating anything when we're out (meals or snacks). We've recently bulked up on vitamin C by eating more grapefruit and clementines, and by drinking more orange juice. And for the last 3 weeks, I've made sure the boys and I have all gotten a minimum of 3 servings of fruits and vegetables per day. So far, so good!

  9. I do all of this except the hand sanitizer - maybe I should start carrying some!
